The Women and Leadership Australia (WLA) has released its 2018 list of women who’ll be receiving excellence in women’s leadership awards at events across the country in the coming months.
The awards recognise individuals who have worked to elevate the visibility and importance of Australian women achieving equitable access to higher levels of leadership across all industries and organisations.
Gail Kelly will be recognised with the national award, for her pioneering work as the first female CEO of a major bank, Westpac.
Professor Gillian Triggs will be recognised at the NSW event, for her work as the former president of the Australian Human Rights Commission.
Magda Szubanski will collect the award at the Melbourne event, in recognition of her work in comedy, acting, writing and activism.
Dr Kirstin Ferguson will be recognised in Brisbane, for her work as a leading company director, role model to women, and the #CelebratingWomen campaign she ran in 2017, celebrating 757 women from 37 countries.
Major General Simone Wilkie AO, will be recognised in Canberra for her work in the Australian Defence Force, including as Commander of the Australian Defence College.
Nova Peris OAM, will be recognised in Darwin, for achievements as an Olympic Gold Medallist, Federal Senator and adviser across sport and recreation.
Dr Kate Stannage will collect the award in Perth, for her work as President of the Australian Paediatric Orthopaedic Society.
Taryn Brumfitt will be recognised in Adelaide, for her campaigning work on women’s body image, and her role as founder of the Body Image Movement.
Marita Cheng will be recognised in Tasmania, for her work as a women-in-technology advocate and tech entrepreneur.
Dr Kirstin Ferguson said she’s honoured to be one of the seven women recognised, especially as she sees it as an opportunities to remind us to forget about the ladder for women in leadership, as it can only help one woman at a time. “I believe we need to throw down a fishing net and bring up many, many women together.”
Suzi Finkelstein, WLA Program Director, said the awards recognise the positive influence of women leaders across Australia.
“Each and every award winner has had a tremendously positive impact on our society. Showcasing the hard work and dedication of these high achievers is extremely important.”
